I don't know how many times I've gone back to this film. Religious films have a tendency of manipulation over audiences. Choral background, especially, twists a lot of minds. But the sincerity of this story is phenominal. There are other things at work here which made this film an artistic masterpiece. The lighting and the closeup of Anne Revere as she calls Bernadette to sit by the fire with her. When Revere talks of how the years pass, you can see the lines on her face and how tired she is. Revere's performance is a revelation, indeed , it was nominated for an Academy Award. Other great performances include Lee J. Cobb, Roman Bohnen, Vincent Price, Charles Bickford and Blanche Yurka. It is a marvelous film (William Snyder - youtube.com).
